What I Ate in a Week: Shannon’s Food Diary

Here at Grubhub, our employees are pretty obsessed with food. Every day, we’re making sure delicious food finds its way to your door….and to ours. Say what? Correct, we too order from Grubhub (so meta).

With our “What I Ate in a Week” series, you’ll get a sneak peek into the lives of actual — never not hungry — Grubhub team members. A nice benefit that happens to come with our jobs is what we call “mealperks” — our weekly Grubhub stipend. Clearly, we’re using this to get the best bites in town each and every week.

On deck, we have: Shannon, on associate on our Email Marketing team. Get the lowdown on her delivery highlights of the week and top ordering hacks.

Let’s meet Shannon.

I grew up in a suburb outside of Chicago and currently live in Edgewater on the North Side of the city. I love exploring and eating different types of cuisines, making art and watching the latest movies. I’m also a big collector–I like buying and displaying a variety of collectible items, mainly related to film, television, and video games.

My favorite foods include sushi, steak, and anything with truffle in/on it. Honestly, there isn’t much I won’t try, but I am not a big fan of pickles–unless they are on a Chicago-style hot dog.

And here are my top delivery eats from last week…

Sinfully Healthy Sandwich from Pastoral

Pastoral is an artisanal food and wine shop and restaurant that carries some of the best cheeses I’ve ever tasted. My go-to is the Sinfully Healthy sandwich with local turkey, Fromager d’Affinois (a soft French, double-cream cheese), mango chutney, greens, and mustard on a french baguette. Normally, this sandwich comes on whole wheat, but I put in special instructions that I’d like it on a baguette instead. This sandwich is a great contrast of flavors, with a killer combo of the robust cheese, sweet chutney, and spicy mustard.

Ginger Chicken Bowl from Lotus Banh Mi

Lotus Banh Mi is a popular Vietnamese restaurant and favorite among co-workers that offers dishes like pho, banh mi sandwiches and rice bowls. I always order the ginger chicken bowl with brown rice, jalapeños, bean sprouts, green onions, crispy shallots, sunny-side egg, and coconut curry sauce. I’m also a big fan of spicy food, so I put in a special instructions note to add extra sriracha.

An Assortment of Sushi Rolls from Gorilla Sushi

I’ve been getting pickup from Gorilla Sushi for a while now and it has easily become one of my favorite spots. The fish is always fresh and the rolls are super flavorful. My favorite thing about this place in particular is that a majority of the menu items are $2.95 each, so you can mix and match rolls, nigiri, sashimi, appetizers, and still spend less than $20. Don’t worry, they also have full-size rolls and cooked entrées on the menu. I ordered the Volcano Roll (my favorite: a spicy tuna roll topped with a torched spicy scallop), Spicy Trio Roll, Mini Godzilla Roll, salmon and tuna nigiri.

Falafel Bowl from IDOF (I Dream of Falafel)

IDOF is a Mediterranean fast-casual restaurant that has build-your-own menu options and is my go-to spot when I want something vegetarian. Ordering my meal for pickup always gets me in and out without waiting, and the ingredients are always fresh and flavorful. I ordered the falafel bowl with rice, hummus, olives, feta, cabbage slaw, tomatoes, cucumber, tzatziki, and a drizzle of hot sauce.

Tune in next week for the latest edition of “What I Ate in a Week.” Will it make you hungry? Probably...but, we can help with that.
